Things To Remmeber When Communicating On-line

Please people remember that traditional communication is at risk when communicating through cell phones, texting, e-mails and chat rooms. Face to face para language & body language are non-existent online both clarity and effectiveness are at risk. Choose your words carefully. People do hold different meanings to certain words so the message you try to convey may get misinterpreted.

Also communication can be verbal and non-verbal. Silence is communication ( It may mean I understand, I need private time, I disagree or mere avoidance). You can place emphasizes on certain words in your statements and depending on the person and the meaning they hold is whether or not that person will fully understand you or become hurt and offended. Don't assume you both carry the same understanding about certain topics, events and words. Semantics!!! Know their meanings of words as well as your own. We must be clear.

Remember once the words have been said you can't take them back so if you are not sure people will understand what you are saying online please refrain until you see them in person. Even then once in person know that communication is a two way street and what is being said has to be understood by your listener to become effective. Try to further explain things so that your point is not missed.

Remember others may not mean what we hear them say depending on their mood. Everything is a factor in communicating. Our words may say one thing but our bodies may say another and assumptions are often made when communicating online because we are not around the person to gather a full understanding for our interpreting to be effective. If you can't remember anything of this just remember important elements are missing when communicating through technology. So be clear, concise and to the point.
