4 types of, 3 causes of, 3 ways of coping w/ & 20 tips for managing : STRESS

Stress - rate of wear and tear within the body; anxious or threatening feeling that comes when we interpret or appraise a situation as being more than our psychological resources can adequately handle.


Types Of Stress

Eustress - a good short-term stress that strengthens us for immediate physical activity, creativity, and enthusiasm. Short lived, easily identified.


Distress
- is negative or harmful stress that causes us to constantly readjust or adapt. Distress occurs when we feel no control over outcomes; we see few choices or no choices; the source of stress is not clear; the stress is prolonged over a period of time, or several sources exists simultaneously. Distress is accompanied by feelings of tension, pressure, and anxiety rather than the concerted energy of eustress.

Hyperstress
- overload occurs when stressful events pile up and stretch the limits of our adaptability. Example: Goes through a divorce, lose a parent and become ill all in the same year.

Hypostress
- underload occurs when we are bored, lacking stimulation, or unchallenged. This type of stress frustrates our need for variety and new experiences.



Some Causes of Stress (Life Events)

Anticipated Life Events: graduation, entering college, a job promotion, marriage, birth and retirement.

Unexpected Life Events
: Serious accident, separation from a spouse or someone we love, sudden death of a loved one, divorce, and financial problems.

Accumulating Life Events:
Dead-end job, traffic, deadlines and pressures, and on-going conflict w/ friends or family members; Daily hassles.




Three Ways Coping With Stress (Options)
When confronted with stressful events and situations you may consider:

Change Environments We might choose to move to another city, change jobs or separate from our spouse.

Change the Environment We can often work to improve the situation that is causing us so much stress.

Work off Stress, Have Fun, Talk It Out
Give In Occasionally, Do Something for Others, Have Some Real Close Friends, Eat Sensibly, Get Organized, Rehearse, Do It Now, Learn to Say "No", Learn to Accept What You Cannot Change, Avoid Self-Medication, Live a Balanced Life, Get Enough Sleep and Rest, Write In A Journal or Diary, Shun the "Perfect" Urge, Develop a Regular Exercise Program, Take Care of Yourself, Learn to Relax

In relation to stress it is not really the event that causes stress, it is our reaction to it --our attitude.
